NetApp Snapshot Management (Create, List, Reserve, Schedule)

What is a NetApp Snapshot ?

A NetApp Snapshot is a “Point in time” data copy using software which uses minimal storage space and does not affect performance.

This Netapp HowTo is useful for the following

  • NetApp Show Snapshots on volume
  • NetApp Create Snapshot
  • Schedule NetApp Snapshot
  • Show / Set Snapshot space in volume

NetApp Create Snapshot

To create a snapshot called “cifs1-snap” manually enter:

netapp> snap create cifs1 cifs1-snap

We can confirm this snapshot has been created with:

Schedule NetApp Snapshot

To schedule a NetApp snapshot enter:

snap sched volname schedule

This command is a little complicated, the following example will create a snapshot backup schedule for the volume “cifs1” for 4 weekly, 7 daily and 10 hourly snapshot backups. The numbers after the @ sign represent the time of the hourly snapshot, so in this example a snapshot would be taken every hour from 0900 to 1800 hours.

Example:

netapp> snap sched cifs1 4 7 10@9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18

NetApp Show Snap Reserve Space

To show the snapshot reserve space for a volume enter:

netapp> snap reserve cifs1
Volume cifs1: current snapshot reserve is 5% or 25600 k-bytes.

NetApp Set Snapshot Reserve Size

To set the snapshot reserve space to 10% enter:

netapp> snap reserve cifs1 10

You can confirm the snapshot size change using:

netapp> snap reserve cifs1
Volume cifs1: current snapshot reserve is 10% or 51200 k-bytes.

NetApp Show Snapshots

To show NetApp snapshots enter the following command:

The above shows the snapshots for the volume vol1 and cifs1.
